Chinese Planes (Mu Bao)
The basic design of the Chinese plane(Mu Bao) is similar to the JapaneseKanna. The major difference is that theChinese plane can be used on either thepull or the push stroke, whereas theJapanese Kanna can only be used onthe pull stroke. The larger Chineseplanes have a cross-handle to facilitatepush-stroke use (which can be removedfor use on the pull stroke). The bladesare square (not tapered) and are thereforeheld in place using a wedge orlever cap.
The elegantly carved woodenblocks are the most captivating featureof the Chinese planes. They are made ofeither Hei Tan (a fine-grained type ofebony) or Shun-Gee (a very dense, highly figured type of rosewood thathas been used for making fine Chinesefurniture for centuries). The surfaces ofthe blocks have been smoothed by handusing scrapers and are polished (notvarnished) to give them a better feel.
The blades of the standard line ofplanes are made of wear resistant HSS(ca. 64 RC). The blades of the specialpurpose planes are made of forged carbonsteel (ca. 58 RC).
Blade width 30 mm, block length 125 mm.
